Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how Scott Robertson ("I", "me", or "my") collects, uses, and protects information when you visit this portfolio website.
Information Collection
Contact Form Data
When you use the contact form, I collect: name, email address, company/organization, inquiry type, subject, and message content. This information is used to respond to your inquiry and is delivered through Resend, an email provider acting as a processor. The email also includes your IP address and user agent for security and abuse prevention.
Analytics Data
This site uses Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to count page views and measure page performance. Both are cookieless and set no cross-site identifier. The data is aggregated and contains nothing that identifies you personally.
Technical Data
Basic technical information such as browser type, device information, and IP address may be collected through standard web server logs for security and performance purposes.
Data Usage
- • Respond to contact form inquiries and professional communications
- • Improve website functionality and user experience
- • Analyze website traffic patterns (anonymized data only)
- • Ensure website security and prevent abuse
Data Protection
I implement appropriate security measures to protect your personal information:
- • HTTPS encryption for all data transmission
- • Secure form handling and data storage practices
- • Limited access to personal information
- • Regular security updates and monitoring
Data Retention
Contact form submissions are retained for up to 2 years to maintain communication history for professional purposes. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting me through the provided contact methods.
Third-Party Services
This website uses the following third-party services:
- • Vercel: Website hosting and deployment, plus the cookieless Web Analytics and Speed Insights described above
- • Resend: Processes and delivers contact form emails, including the sender's IP address and user agent
- • YouTube: The Planet DOTS trailer and achievement videos use YouTube's nocookie embeds. Their players load only when you press Play or open a video. YouTube then receives your browser request and applies its own privacy and cookie practices.
- • Map tile providers for the Planet DOTS demo: Mapterhorn (terrain), Open Waters (sea-floor depth), OpenFreeMap (OpenStreetMap coastline), EOX (Sentinel-2 imagery), and the national mapping agencies whose aerial imagery is shown in their regions: swisstopo (Switzerland), IGN (France), IGN España (Spain), PDOK (Netherlands), GSI (Japan), Spatial Services NSW (New South Wales) and USGS (United States). On a desktop computer with enough graphics capability the demo switches these layers on by itself a few seconds after it starts; elsewhere they stay off until you switch them on or open a shared demo link that has one enabled. While a layer is on, your browser requests map tiles for the area you zoom in on directly from the provider for that area, which discloses your IP address and the area you are viewing to them. Nothing else about you is sent. You can switch either layer off in the demo's panel, and the demo remembers that choice for your next visit.
- • 3D buildings in the Planet DOTS demo: whenever both map-tile layers above are on, the demo also fetches building shapes so it can draw them in 3D. Building footprints come from OpenStreetMap via OpenFreeMap, the same provider as the coastline; in Switzerland, building geometry instead comes from swisstopo's swissBUILDINGS3D dataset. As with the map tiles, this discloses your IP address and the area you are viewing to whichever provider serves that area, and nothing else about you. 3D buildings are on by default whenever the two layers above are, and can be switched off separately in the demo's panel; the demo remembers that choice too.
- • Trees and rocks in the Planet DOTS demo: on the same terms as 3D buildings, the demo places trees and rocks from OpenStreetMap land cover (from the same OpenFreeMap tiles) and, in Switzerland, fetches swisstopo's surveyed trees. This too discloses your IP address and the area you are viewing to the provider serving it, and nothing else. It can be switched off separately in the panel, and the demo remembers that choice.
- • City lights at night in the Planet DOTS demo: when the night side of the Earth is in view within a few thousand kilometres, the demo fetches NASA's Black Marble night-lights imagery for the area around the camera from NASA GIBS (gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov). This discloses your IP address and the area you are viewing to NASA, and nothing else about you.
These services have their own privacy policies and data handling practices. Web fonts are self-hosted with the rest of the site, so displaying this page makes no request to a font provider.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- • Request access to your personal data
- • Request correction of inaccurate data
- • Request deletion of your data
- • Withdraw consent for data processing
- • File a complaint with relevant data protection authorities
Cookies and Browser Storage
This website uses minimal, essential cookies for functionality. The site analytics described above are cookieless; YouTube embeds follow the third-party practices described above. The Planet DOTS demo keeps three values in your browser's local storage: planet-dots:intro-seen, so its guided intro plays only once; planet-dots:fidelity, which remembers the detail layers you switched on or off - terrain, imagery, 3D buildings, and trees and rocks - so they come back as you left them; and planet-dots:fade, which remembers whether you chose to fade between places instead of flying. None of them leaves your device. You can control cookies and clear site data through your browser preferences.
